In the last edition of FITNESS INSIDER, we took a slightly different look at a classic gym exercise – the ‘lat’ pull-down, otherwise referred to vertical cable pulling pattern. I demonstrated how the vertical cable pulling pattern can be one of the great exercises for improving posture, alignment, and function of the core. In this video, I will demonstrate how if performed properly, the vertical cable pulling pattern improves scapular stability:

by improving the alignment of the trunk and spine, improves scapulo-thoracic function;

by improving scapular stability by improving function of the serratus anterior, lower trapezius, and latissimus dorsi;

by training the entire shoulder complex in a fundamental movement pattern.

In the next edition of FITNESS INSIDER, we will finish our discussion on corrective exercise solutions for improving function in your clients and helping them achieve their health and fitness goals.

Looking to discover the best strategies to solving your client’s biggest issues that keep them from achieving their fitness goals? Looking to develop yourself as a highly paid expert this year and helping more of your clients achieve their health and fitness goals? Then consider the Integrative Movement Specialist™ certification.

All ten spots are filled for our upcoming Integrative Movement Specialist™ certification program-Team #5. Please check our website for announcements of future dates and locations.

“The days of simply giving exercise are over. Teach your clients how to move better and empower them to achieve their health and fitness goals. Develop the foundation of your success with the Integrative Movement SpecialistTM certification program and earn the respect and the income deserved of an expert.”

Hello – Jenice and I hope you had a great holiday season and that your 2013 is off to a great start. This year is already flying by so without further adieu, let’s get started on helping you become the expert your clients need, want, and will pay for so that you can make 2013 your most successful year ever as a fitness professional.

In this edition of FITNESS INSIDER, we are going to look at a standby exercise in virtually every training program – the ‘lat’ pull-down. We will refer to the ‘lat’ pull-down as a vertical cable pulling pattern, as it is so much more than an exercise for the latissimus dorsi. Properly performed, the vertical cable pulling pattern can be one of the great exercises for improving posture and function of the core. Unfortunately, performed incorrectly – much the way many individuals perform the pattern – this pattern can directly contribute to and/or perpetuate an individual’s dysfunctional pattern.

There are several benefits of performing this pattern for the thoracopelvic core. Performed properly, the vertical cable pulling pattern:

improves trunk and spine posture by helping align the thorax over the pelvis;

through improved alignment, facilitates improvements in respiration and stabilization;

improves function of the core by decreasing compression of the spine during pulling patterns;

through improved alignment and spinal decompression, improves function of the psoas, diaphragm, and pelvic floor and other deep spinal stabilizers;

trains the muscles of the thoracopelvic canister as spinal stabilizers.

In the next edition of FITNESS INSIDER, we will continue our discussion on the vertical cable pulling pattern and look at how it can serve as an important pattern for improving scapular function.

Looking to discover the best strategies to solving your client’s biggest issues that keep them from achieving their fitness goals? Looking to develop yourself as a highly paid expert this year and helping more of your clients achieve their health and fitness goals? Then consider joining our team of professionals this March as we begin the Integrative Movement Specialist™ certification.

We are currently accepting applications to become a part of the industries first program designed specifically for those of you that work with the general population. There are currently <del>6 </del><del>4</del> 1 spot remains for the training program considered by past participant Luis as the “free thinkers dream”
“The days of simply giving exercise are over. Teach your clients how to move better and empower them to achieve their health and fitness goals. Develop the foundation of your success with the Integrative Movement SpecialistTM certification program and earn the respect and the income deserved of an expert.”

Happy New Year!

We hope you have had a great holiday season and that your 2013 has started off on the right path to accomplishing your goals.

Regarding the topic of goals, did you set your goals for 2013? What’s on your list of goals for your business this year?

ü Do you want to attract more clients?

ü Do you want to have an even greater impact with your current clientele?

ü Do you want to be known as an expert in corrective exercise and become a part of the health care solution?

If you answered YES to any of those questions than you need to develop the skill set, strategies, and best practices to work with a diverse group of individuals so that you can help them achieve their functional goals. And do you know which group of individuals most needs your services?

The general population clientele.

This includes the baby boomer and rapidly growing senior populations, the pre and post-rehabilitation clientele as well as the pre and post-natal clientele. And the corrective exercise strategies that we share with you through our newsletter and videos are some of the best strategies we know for identifying and correcting movement dysfunction in the general population clientele. These strategies are some of the same patterns that we teach in our Integrative Movement Specialist Certification™ – one of the few programs that was designed to provide fitness professionals with the skillset and strategies for working with these types of individuals.

Why should you consider joining our team? What makes the Integrative Movement Specialist Certification™ so different from all the other programs on the market? Listen to what a couple of our previous team members have reported:

“I just finished taking the IMS program with Dr. Evan and Jenice. I can say with extreme confidence that the program went above and beyond in exceeding all of my expectations. It is without a doubt the best program I have ever taken. In the few short months I have been in the IMS program, I have been able to significantly improve my client’s posture, improve their movement patterns and decrease or take away their pain all together.

The material they are teaching is very cutting edge and far more advanced than any specialty certification currently on the market. When you become an IMS graduate you are walking away with more than a piece of paper, you will not only have a system that will be able to change the lives of each and every client you work with, you will also walk away with a new family. Dr. Evan and Jenice go overboard to give you all the support you need to feel confident and comfortable implementing the system, not only while you are in the class but long after you have gone home.

This course will help take your training knowledge and pay scale to the next level.” ~Karen Skidmore, IMS Team #4

“I would like to thank you both for sharing your knowledge with the IMS team.I can’t imagine I functioned without this very important logical information about the human body. A very simplistic yet powerful set of principles channeled my understanding of the body systems to a whole new level. I have always enjoyed my work as a pilates instructor and have had questions about movements that I couldn’t answer, having been through the IMS program I am now able to make some connections.” ~Tarannum N., Team #3

“The IMS Certification is a free-thinkers dream”~Luis Bracamonte, IMS #3

There are three things I believe differentiate the Integrative Movement Specialist Certification™ from all the other programs that are available to you.
We have a real crisis in our country. While our lifespan may be increasing, our quality of life is suffering and there are more sick and un-healthy individuals in our country than ever before in our history. Unfortunately, the medical profession has very few if any solutions to this health care crisis. And to make matters worse, these are the same individuals that are going to seek out your services as a fitness professional.

If you’ve ever heard me present at conferences or workshops you’ve heard me say that I believe Fitness Professionals are at the forefront of the solution to the health crisis. Yes, at Fitness Education Seminars we believe that so strongly that we’ve made that the tag-line for our company – ‘the movement based solution to the health care crisis.’

The fitness professional who believes that and delivers the highest level of expertise service for their clients, is the fitness professional of the future. The fitness professional who adds value to their client’s lives and solves their movement based myofascial and skeletal problems will succeed in this rapidly changing health and fitness landscape. And the fitness professional who is an expert, delivers exceptional service, and becomes a solution for their clients issues, will attract more clients and see their earning potential virtually explode in the coming years.

If you want to be that expert, if you want to differentiate yourself from the rest of the fitness industry, and attract more clients than you ever dreamed possible by providing real results for your clients, than you must understand and apply three key components. In this video, I would like to share with you the three key components you need to develop yourself into an expert that I know you are looking to become. And if you are already an expert, than this video will serve as a great reminder as to why you are that expert and why your role as a fitness professional is so much more important than just giving exercises.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and an extraordinary new year!

Dr. Evan Osar

Group Exercise is here to stay. ACSM lists group exercise as #1 training trend for 2013. Being a group instructor has to be one of the most challenging jobs in the fitness industry. Not only are you responsible for creating workouts for your clients, you are also responsible for the task of making sure each client can perform the exercises safely and correctly. This is no small task. In this webinar, we will discuss what goes wrong and what you can do to help your clients prevent hip, knee and ankle injury in bootcamps and group exercise.
Do your train clients with hip issues such as chronically tight hip flexors, weak gluteals, and/or stability issues when they stand on one leg? If so, then this is the webinar for you.

In past episodes of FITNESS INSIDER, we have discussed how to improve hip stabilization through improving posture, stabilization, and integration of these corrections into the fundamental movement patterns of squatting, lunging, and bending. In part II of this 3-part webinar series, we are going to look at how core stability can have a direct impact on hip stability. In fact, if you pay attention and recognize the patterns we’ll discuss in this webinar, you will be able to help so many of your clients solve their hip and even chronic low back issues.

In the next edition of FITNESS INSIDER, we will look at simple way to improve flexibility – without stretching – by improving core stability. And I will let you know about a valuable resource to help you remain a leader in the fitness industry and attract an increasing number of clients by establishing yourself as a movement expert.

I hope you had a great Labor Day and were able to enjoy the weekend with family and/or friends. Jenice and I had a chance to spend time with family and a couple of our close friends and industry leaders Pat Rigsby (www.fitbusinessinsider.com) and Drs. Chris and Kara Mohr (www.mohrresults.com). It is always great to discuss business and share ideas with smart, successful individuals and we came away with some great ideas we will be implementing this fall. Speaking of fall, football is upon us. I am very excited by the first week of football because no matter who you root for, everyone starts with no losses and there is reason for optimism for the season.

Groin pulls and related injuries are among the more common injuries in sports such as football and other sports that require rapid acceleration/deceleration of the body. While there are many recommended treatments and exercises for groin injuries, for example stretching the adductors and hip flexors as well as strengthening the gluteals and core, very few of these approaches take into consider the underlying cause of most groin injuries.

In this edition of FITNESS INSIDER, we will look at 3 common – albeit frequently discussed – causes of groin injuries. And I will share with you one of the quickest and easiest things you can do help minimize the risks of these injuries whether your client is a professional, collegiate, or recreational athlete.

Enjoy the start of your fall and we’ll catch up with you in our next edition of FITNESS INSIDER where we will be discussing the biggest myth in core training and a common postural correction strategy that can actually lead to injury and dysfunction in your clients.

We hope you have been enjoying the Olympics – what great competition and great athletes. It is inspiring for us to watch great bodies and minds working to accomplish a lofty goal such as competing at the Olympic level.

However, while we can admire the dedication, perseverance, and investment in time, energy, and passion of professional and Olympic level athletes, we must keep several things in mind when it comes to their training:

1. They are great athletes and represent the 1% of 1% of the population so therefore we can’t emulate their training habits;
2. Many professional and Olympic athletes compete while injured – they just are able to compensate better than the rest of us;
3. All professional and Olympic athletes have professional coaches, trainers, and therapists to help them compete at a high level.

If you train the general population and they don’t possess great movement patterns, are free from injuries, and have a solid recuperation plan (nutritionally, sleeping habits, work with a chiropractic physician or physiotherapist to keep their body balanced) then they shouldn’t be trained like an athlete!

However, these individuals do require someone who understands how to assess, perform the appropriate corrective exercise, and coach with an emphasis on the principles of human movement – restoration of normal breathing patterns, maintaining joint centration during their patterns, and incorporating these components into the fundamental movement patterns.

Speaking of coaching, in this edition of Fitness Insider, we will look at a common cause of discussion and debate regarding hip function during one of the premier lower body patterns – the deadlift. And we will look at several concepts regarding hip function and whether you should:

• Squeeze your glutes at the top of the deadlift;

• Drive your hips forward at the top of the deadlift;

• Lift your chest up and squeeze your shoulder blades down and back…

In the next edition of Fitness Insider, we will look at a common lower extremity injury – groin pulls – that results from the incorrect utilization of the gluteus maximus and other hip extensors during exercise as well as during exercises of daily living.
